The sea monster holding a dying fish

"The sea monster holding a dying fish"
(work in progress)
To be honest, the concept of this work has nothing to do with the environmental issue, it was simply a idea/imagination of mine. As my usual method of working with painting, I allow the idea comes to me without further deep thoughts, I'd like to keep my works light and simply, but at the same time it allows people to have the space of deeper thoughts.
As the method of my painting technique, I have challenge my usual style (landscape, rock), I allowed the paint bush to be more lose up in order to achieve the like of water wave, but at the same time, I kept my old colour techniques, in which it could be seeing in some of my older paintings.

Experienement and new media

Painting on fabric, acrylic, ink.

Cubist marks on skin.
Dennis Oppenheim has done a film which he pressed his figure nail onto skin. It happened to me by accident, I found this interesting mark which almost like abstract geometric shapes on my skin, and I took photo of it, and edited in photoshop in order to bring up the contrast of the mark.

Cubist study

This is my cubist painting study (in progress).
The lines within this work has transformed into geometric shapes, which was not my intension, but I will keep working on it and see what happens.

Study of Cubist painting

I have always been interested in Cubist practices, in my opinion, Cubist painting and drawing are technical, which I was drawn into the geometric shapes and the dark and light contrast. Cubist painting reviews a new way of seeing the object, shows the 3 dimension in a 2 dimension surface.

Red Chair
Oil on canvas
51 x 41 cm
Blues on the Porch
Oil on Canvas
2004
51 x 68 cm

These works are painted by D.M .Ross, who is known as a contemporary cubist. In his blog, he mentioned "With no formal art education or training I began painting as a method of releasing a creative urge. My influences are quite obviously the great Cubists - (Picasso, Braque, Gris etc.) but I enjoy a wide variety of work , including Cezanne , Bacon, Pollock, Audette,Gleeson ...too many to mention.
Some of my pieces can linger un-finished for years as I wait for the picture to reveal itself to me, and it is not unusual for them to be "modified" months after I believe they are finished. Other times paintings can be finished in a week."

The difference between his works and other traditional cubist works which I found, that he used many different range of colours in his practice, and his works are more recognizable to the object itself, in which after the cubism movement, cubists started working towards abstraction and dadaism.
The method of cubist painting has never been reviewed, cubists seem are finding their own way of expressing their practice. I have been researching, studying and practicing cubist painting. The drawing I have done which I could see a sense of cubism within, but it was not the correct way to express it, not as the method that explain in the articles or books about cubist painting. I started working on my first cubist painting, which I found it is a lot harder than my drawing practice, drawing has more control of what you creating, but painting is more lose, especially towards lines and shapes.

Cubism drawing study

After the study of Minimalism, I drawn to the shapes and I started studying the method of Cubism. Tom taught me in his study, he would draw a basic facial structure, and break it up with a few lines, then put in the shades in order to indicate the lines and the shapes.
I have done some practice, and I found that cubism drawing is a very slow process, which I found medicating. I decided to take it to the next level, start working on a painting with cubism style.

Minimalism study

I did some practice study on minimalism, well pretty much the concept of Minimalism, but I was drawn to the geometric shapes and over layering them into new shapes and texture.
These two pieces which I have named "drawing on two A4 size paper" and "two A4 size paper", are base on the idea of Minimalism and Conceptual art, "what you see is what it means" and art is an idea, and my idea is to play with two pieces of A4 size paper.

New project for video art project

I was inspired after watch the video "sung" by Nina Yuen. She simply used everyday life as the object, and constructed this video piece with words, such as a sentence which start with "I'm sorry...".
I was keen to try it and use myself and my personal life as the subject matter, I started filming "Why", with the questions that I want to and would never get a chance to ask in my last failure relationship.

Video art work research

"DON BY NINA YUEN, 2006

"My work as a filmmaker engages with the production of false personal memories, and with stirring disagreements about the past in the accounts of my family and friends. I regard myself primarily as a passive artist; my work is created at the intersection of a recorded document and a lifestyle that I adopt. For the taping of each film, I live for at least a week in a constructed enviroment, with its own conventions governing ceremony, behavior, and dress."

Drawing the scenes

I found that drawing nudity and sex scenes are very disturbing, and I have to keep telling myself that this work is not about sexual issue, it is the concept of everyone, everything is fucking each other in this world, there are many issue in idea, and it could be very offensive. It doesn't feel like the right thing to do, but I have to keep exploring and developing my concept further, no matter what happens.

Contemporary Neo-expressionism painting

I have been looking at some Neo-expressionism painting, not by much of the deep down meaningful concept, but the balance within the image.

melayna simister

Research for my material collage painting.
I enjoy the aesthetic balance of this collage by Melayna Simister, it is a very "busy" collage painting, by layers of different colours and shapes of cardboard paper, which creates a image of texture, but well balanced. It has very strong sculptural aesthetic balance.

The empty box

Just another random idea.
A empty box (life size) with a beautiful door (outside), the idea of people fall in love with the outside beauty, and no one really cares about the inside, even it is empty.

Material collage painting

I have been doing research and developing ideas for my "text painting" project, to work with the idea of letting people to read the painting in the content of the visual analysis of a painting that I have "painted" in my mind.
The content of my "text painting" is getting larger and larger, and in my opinion it would be hard to maintain the viewer's concentration and ask them to finish reading the painting, and with the idea and concept I have developed, it would be more powerful and effective to use visual image within the content.
I started to look for a simpler content which creates more effective impact on the viewer.
After the lecture on conceptual art, I found conceptual art is the best way to present this idea of mine, I want to play with the words, shapes, colours, for the purpose of "the idea of art is not the object or the content, but the meaning, the idea. I want to play with the viewer's mind when they looking at my collage painting, I want to make them confuse about " what they see is not what it means". At the same time, I want to keep the sculptural aesthetic balance in this collage.

Text painting idea

I remembered one of the great Dutch painter from the 14 century, Hieronymus Bosch. I was very impressed by his painting "The Garden of Earthly Delights", when this painting came out in the 14 century, it could of be a shock with the sexual issue it has towards human, animals, demons, and the nature. And i was inspired, it almost presented the freedom of sexuality, like today's society, I don't have many words to say towards this subject matter, what really attracted me was the busyness in the painting, the every individual story has been put together into a large theme, and people could read the painting by looking into it, and discover all the little themes and figures.
For my text painting, I started looking into conceptual art, with simple words, affective words, but it wouldn't satisfy me, as I am a painter. So i decided to take this seriously, use serious words to describe this imaginary painting in my mind, and write it out onto the canvas.

Take 1

Tom and I took our first shoot today, because we were not well organized, so we haven't got much done, but it was a good trial, to experience the locations, the acting expressions, the movements, which could prove our practice in the future. We did a few test run, and I need to improve the script, and my acting skills. And Tom did a pretty good job, all he needs is a musk. I'm going to put the scripts up when I finish them, and hopefully our next take will be heaps better.

The night of living dead

One of the film I have researched, which I found a sense of humor, maybe because it is a 1960's film, looking back with today's technological advance, the vocal, sound and acting were very disadvantaged (not sure if is the right word for this), in which creates a "dark humor" (to me).

Sculpture project

I sketched out the composition of a person cuddling another from the back, and the shape of the body was very interesting, instead of drawing out the whole figure, I simplified the figures to the shapes and the curves of their torso, and linked them together to a abstract form, then I added up some graphic pattens to balance the compositions that I have placed the figures.
This is a draft sketch.

Stencil

A stencil is a template used to draw or paint identical letters, numbers, symbols, shapes, or patterns every time it is used. Stencil technique in visual art is also referred to as pochoir. Stencils are formed by removing sections from template material in the form of text or an image. This creates what is essentially a physical negative. The template can then be used to create impressions of the stenciled image, by applying pigment on the surface of the template and through the removed sections, leaving a reproduction of the stencil on the underlying surface. Aerosol or painting stencils must remain contiguous after the image is removed, in order for the template to remain functional. Sections of the remaining template which are isolated inside removed parts of the image are called islands. All islands must be connected to other parts of the template with bridges, or additional sections of narrow template material which are not removed.

Mel Bochner
Conceptual artist
I found his text paintings are very effective, I am interested in his uses texts as the subject matter in his painting, simply playing with the colours and the composition of the texts.
Comparing with my text painting idea, his works are simpler and more effective to the viewer.

Prints

I want to make a series of screen print by using photo images, the content would be the patten created by everyday environment, by using vertical and horizontal compositions, place the patten onto the paper, but keeping a large amount of white space on the paper, simple and effective.

"The Painting"

This is a text "painting" idea, which I am going to use text to describe the content of a imaginary/fantasy painting, and "painting" (write) it onto a canvas.
My purpose is to associate the text with the viewer's vision, by using their imagination, every individual would "see" a different image. I want to explore how much impact of the text could effect visual imagining.
For example: When you see "blue", everyone would have different vision of blue, light blue, dark blue and etc.

cow cow cow

The idea is to build a double fence in a circle, and put some cows in it, facing the same direction, the space only allow them to walk through individually, so they would walk and follow each other, as a cycle. The play is will they follow the environment system? or they will go out of control? And what if two of them have been placed facing each other? Will one of them start walking backwards? Or will they stop? I am seeking for this interesting answer.
The reason I want to work with animals is that they are simple, they do not have complicated thoughts, but they do have their nature instincts. The change of the environment might have a impact on them.

Classics movie

I remember watching this film which is about making fun of old classic black and white none sounded movie. The texts has been changed in between scenes, for example, there would be one of the character speaking for a while in the scene, and the texts comes up with one word or a short sentence, Or something totally irrelevant (with the scene).
And also I remember seeing some of the famous movies (like star wars) has been remade, by redone the voice of each characters, Darth Vadar was saying "fuck" every five seconds, it was hilarious.

What is performance art installation

WHAT IS PERFORMANCE ART INSTALLATION
Performing art installation:

Blurring the boundary is a necessity:
There was a time when the industrial revolution reduced human ability to mere operations and now with the emergence of nano- tech, on one side, posing a big logical problem for the “presence of human existence” in material world by going zero size, where even the operations are also getting separated from human ability. At the same time, on the other side with technological innovations, tvs, cell phones, digital cameras, computers and printing are flooding us with millions of visual images and communication as big installed object. Under this circumstance, it is become very important for art to define its domain in clear perspective. Installations of monumental blow of up of microscopic world as a protest against nano culture, as it is being practiced, is becoming irrelevant, since it is very much part of the problem itself. It does not portray or protest the human condition.
Now it is time that art as an idea or an exploration of possibilities to define its domain at a new dimension. Keeping this objective, a beginning has been made with a performing art installation “ burn door”, by Master program students, Faculty of arts and humanities, CEPT University, Ahmedabad. Performing art installation is a selective mixture from both performance art and installation art .
Performance art in a broader term tries to establish the existence of artist through time, space, artist and the relationship between performer and audience (human relation), while installation art explores the sensory experience of audience leaving space and time as dimensional constants (object relation). Keeping this ideological existence of performance art and installation art in defining human existence, furthering the idea to address the present day problem of human identity, this new form of art is developed as- performing art installation.
Practice: Performing art installation

Performance will be with” absentia” of performer, signifying the elimination of human race by technology even from the “operator” level while digital visual imaging gives the illusion of self importance ( wrapping up of the performer or deliberate elimination of “visibility” of performer’s body.
No sound.
No artificial lighting
“Conceptual “placements of objects , time and space (in contrast to the idea of non conceptual objects in installation)
Only open ended ideation, where possibilities are viewer’s prerogative

"Physical Attraction"

"The Pills"

After I had a chat with Michelle about how to present "the pills", she suggested me to arrange the photos in a "time line", so when people walk pass, they will be able to see the changes.
In the group exhibition, I arrange the photos from the beginning to the end in a sequence on the wall, and it caught people's attention, and drawn them to look closer and enjoy the images.

Physical attraction take one!

I use thumb tack to stable the scratchy fabric onto my wardrobe, and filmed my performance (behind the white fabric, inside of my wardrobe). The whole process took about 4 hours, I've used my camera, laptop and video camera to document the performance.
Basically there are still life (pressing my body parts onto the "canvas", soft movements, aggressive movements and expression movements.
In the beginning, I've tested with cloths on, and I was not satisfy with the result which texture of the clothing was showing through the fabric. Next, I've took my cloth off and keep working on my performance, I was quite please with the result, my body structure was showing clearly through the "canvas", and the movements were translucent.
The next step I'm going to edit all my documented films, and put together a short video with sound effect (still in the planing process).

Video art work II

"Three by Three"

artist

Margeaux Walter
Im interested in this piece of work, but I haven't viewed the full version of it, I have sent a request to view this full video, and am waiting for them to get back to me.
I like the idea of using white as the main colour in this video piece, it accentuated the expression of the movement, in relation to clarify the emotion(idea) that the artist wanted present.

video art work

Trailer Truths I (2 min, 2004)
This is a very creative idea of using movie trailers texts, and put together as a piece of video art work.
"Trailer Truths I is the first installment of a trilogy of short films made up of text taken from movie trailers. Words and phrases are collaged together to create a darkly humorous text about war, evil and propaganda.
The work playfully addresses the representation of power and language in the media, and the role of belief in the popular consciousness."
It sounds like almost making seance at a point, but the words (texts) kept going and they seems like leading the audience to another idea or story line.

relief sculpture

My work "physical attraction" has a strong influence from relief sculpture. And that was the way I plan to present my piece.
Randolphlee Mclver's piece "Woman, back view" October, 1996, Plaster relief.
I found that very similar to the effect of the image I have been working on.

Experiment

I took a series of photos base on my own body form, at first I was trying to work with the canvas, and take photos by pressing my body parts onto it, but it wasn't much of success, first, the canvas was too small, it was hard to press large parts of my body, second, the lighting effect wasn't working that way I planed. So I start taking photos of my body without the canvas, and there are a few that I really like, after edited in photoshop, I found the contrast of the light and dark, the bone structure are very interesting. At this point, I have no idea what to do with my idea towards this project, the canvas is not working, but I still want to stick to this idea of body parts, and body form.

MONSTER
I was doing some research on video art for my physical attraction project, and i found this very interesting video which has nothing to do with my work. I like it because it looks simple and easy to make, which is not really, in stop motion animation, you have to narrow down the detail of your image in order to save time and have well budget towards your film. Even though, this animation was well made by the story context .

Documentation

Bas Jan Ader
Dutch/Californian artist Bas Jan Ader was last seen in 1975 when he took off in what would have been the smallest sailboat ever to cross the Atlantic. He left behind a small oeuvre, often using gravity as a medium, which more than 30 years after his disappearance at sea is more influential than ever before.
His work "Fall I" was very encouraging to me, as the way he puts himself into the work, took the physical risk for experimenting new subjectivities.
In image above, I found that the documentation method is very similar to my work "The pills".
